Since its genesis in the eighteenth-century England, Gothic fiction has been counting on considerable contributions from works by women. The relation between Gothic and literature by women has brought about a fictional tradition named “Female Gothic”, term coined by Ellen Moers (1976). In the literary works that compose this tradition, a perspective framed by women’s concerns has allowed to explore terrors and horrors originated from physical and psychological violence suffered by female characters. In this thesis I aim to offer a model of Female Gothic narratives through the description of the formal characteristics and the main themes explored by Gothic writers in their works. For that purpose, I shall base my studies on the theories on Gothic presented by David Punter (1996), Fred Botting (1996), Nick Groom (2012) and Júlio França (2017); and, more specifically, on the considerations about Female Gothic from Ellen Moers (1976), Sandra Gilbert and Susan Gubar (1979) and Anne Williams (1995). Through a comparative analysis between female literature in English and Brazilian literature I will also point out how this model was assimilated and developed by women writers in order to depict the hardships of being a woman in our society.
