The dawn of the XX Century sets the path of Brazilians authors who created some peculiar characters that symbolizes the hinterland - the romanticized hinterland or presenting what Brazil better possessed but Brazil s countryside which narratives shows the severe reality and its own harshness of the period. In which the relations between the progress and the work in the field are represented as confusing and illegal. These relations are even more instigating when it unravels the regional reality, however, provided by a writing with nuances of gothic, leading the reader to disturbing subjects from that period. The encounter between the gothic writing and the regionalism made the works of these authors something really unique, mainly in exposing subjects that brings a range of possibilities involving sociological, political and economic readings of a critical moment in Brazil: the end of colonialism and the beginning of the industrial system. If during the Indianism the hinterland was depicted in an emphasizing way, pointing a bucolic atmosphere, puerile and native, during the Modernism, the hinterland is narrated through the nuances that Brazil didn t want to show. In this scenario, we aim to analyze how the Brazilian hinterland has been, since Romanticism, a fertile soil not only to the understanding of Brazilian literature s evolution and the elite s attitude in relation to national constitution, but also to the understanding of the manifestation of local gothic in dialogue with gothic European tradition
