This paper intends to analyze the symbols and meanings of Maracatu. More specifically, it seeks to understand the dynamics of the Block called Rio Maracatu, investigating how the members make up places before and during the Rio Carnival, either by identifying with certain symbolic forms or with symbolic itineraries crossed by the procession. Besides, this research aims to contribute to a dialogue between popular and academic knowledge, providing more sensitivity to geographical science, from the geographical and humanistic study of a carnival group of maracatu. In this sense, this dissertation will approach culture as built on collective and individual experiences, from various meanings. To understand how Lapa, Ipanema`s edge and some slum communities constitute symbolic places, it will be essential to address the symbols of the places, appropriate by various individuals differently. The theoretical basis for apprehending such a framework consists of the references of Cultural Geography in its Humanistic and Critical aspects, also considering the contributions of other human sciences like History, Anthropology and Sociology. This study adopted the qualitative research and participant observation as a scientific research methodology. This option for this research character allowed a greater connection with the theoretical framework of humanistic geography, which is avid to extricate the multiple meanings built by different individuals and social groups from their spatial experience. This choice also facilitated the interpretation and interaction with the study object. After literature review and three months of field work, our perspective is that it makes no sense to seek a single root for the maracatu, either the Catholic Church or the candomblé (cult Nagô in Pernambuco). It would be more appropriate to consider the maracatu is born as a hybrid culture. In Rio de Janeiro, Maracatu Nation comes through Rio Maracatu group in 1997, (re)meaning certain symbols associated with merriment, keeping others and appropriating spatial symbols of certain areas of the city, creating symbolic places. Remember that the more parts and characteristics of appropriate spaces for Rio Maracatu, namely Lapa, Ipanema or Rio`s communities can be compared to Recife, the greater is the identification of members of this percussion group and, therefore, the greater the sense of home or place, when a procession occurs
