O câncer e sua representação social : do diagnóstico à sobrevida

This study aimed to analyze the social representations of cancer, in association with quality of life, survival and healing, formed by people affected by this disease. The specific objectives are to describe the social representation of cancer formed by people who have newly diagnosed disease, to describe the social representation of cancer formed by people who have survived the disease for at least two years from diagnosis, to compare the social representations of two groups of subjects, specifically with regard to issues of quality of life, survival and healing. The theoretical foundation of this work is the theory of social representations, in its general approach, as proposed by S. Moscovici, and under additional structural approach, due to JC. Abric. The subjects were 120 (one hundred and twenty) patients at the University Hospital Pedro Ernesto (HUPE), in Rio de Janeiro. The research included the application of a brief questionnaire, which focuses on the general data of the interviewee and has closed and open questions including the task of free recall before the term inducer "living with cancer" with all 120 subjects' and a choice of words that best characterize what they have experienced in relation to câncer. Have also been carried out 12 semi- structured interviews - with 6 subjects in each group - in order to raise the contents and internal structure of social representation of cancer formed by the two groups described above. The data collected in the interviews were subjected to content analysis, with a view to an extensive collection of thematic content, whose presence in the representations of two groups of subjects can be investigated. Special attention was given to the analysis of data from free evocations, considering the purpose of comparative research. Among the main results, we observe that the social representation of living with cancer was built as a core element of faith, showing markedly positive, but, as expected, while including, realistically, negative content. From the relationship between the presence of core values - faith and hope of healing - the detection of trends for the mitigation of an element of defeatism, death, one of the groups, and the accentuation of positive coping on the other, we can infer the development of a process of social representation of living with cancer toward an optimistic overcoming the disease, after passing through great suffering
