This work aims to analyze the search for recognition in Mangrove Hill through symbolic mediations favored by samba. With this, it will be shown how the samba generated a breaking point in the kind of recognition sought by the residents of the favela. The conceptual basis of this study initially found support in Hegel's early works, which influenced other 20th century researchers such as Charles Taylor, Nancy Fraser, Alex Honneth, Paul Ricouer. From the geographical point of view, we analyze the kind of recognition that a historically segregated territory could achieve. Thus, some elements of popular culture originated from samba are presented as an empirical contribution to this research. The aspects related to recognition as affirmative and transformative actions and social esteem have as an example the social relations built and materialized from the foundation of G.R.E.S Estação Primeira de Mangueira. The narrowing of social ties and coexistence around the Samba School, the composers of the Morro da Mangueira favela and beyond, created songs that partially portray the reality of life in the favela. Perhaps this has favored mediation between different social classes, which, independent of their hierarchical position in society, move to a territory of culture in search of fun and leisure or even as an escape from demanding capitalist life
