The work in question intends to analyze the work of the french theorist Guy Debord from a geographical approach. The participation of this intellectual between the 1950s and 1960s together with neo-avant-garde groups and as one of the main intellectual artificers of the events known as the May 1968 in Paris is well known. Add to that the publication, in 1967, of The Society of the Spectacle. Considered a tour de force against the tyranny of the media and its power to alienate the common man, Debord's book becomes one of the base texts and influence for contending movements around the world. At the same time it begins to be interpreted by the most different academic aspects such as Philosophy, Sociology, History, Anthropology, Architecture, Communication Sciences and also Geography. The purpose of this Master´s thesis is to analyze the author's thinking - specifically his theory of the society of the spectacle - under the light of Geography, more specifically that part of this science occupied with the urban environment. This approach is justified from the moment That Debordian thought contemplates themes dear to contemporary geography: urban restructuring, the commercialization of the city in the world market of cities, the right to the city and the roles of social agents are some of them. But what kind of parallels, convergences and divergences between the theory of spectacle and urban geographic thought can we ascertain? What are the possible criticisms of Guy Debord's spectacular theory? What is its practical and theoretical utility for our geographical repertoire? In investigating such questions we intend to illuminate our general problematization: how, in a geographic context that privileges the urban environment, can we accept the theory of the society of the spectacle as an analytical tool of socio-spatial reality? It is, therefore, from these questions, their answers and possible unfolding that this work will be organized.
