This work is an attempt to allow the impatients of a University Hospital Service (Serviço de Doenças Infecciosas e Parasitárias - DIP / HUPE-UERJ), bearers of the Acquired Immunodeficiency Syndrome (AIDS), to express in their own voice their experiences. In order to achieve this goal, the narrative methodological principal (Hydén, 1997) was used. The narratives were obtained through interviews structured along four modules, according to the method for constructing oral sources elaborated by Maria Helena Cabral de Almeida Cardoso (1989). The introduction deals with aspects of the professional experience with AIDS, wich originated of this work, attempting to reflected on the experience of having AIDS for the society, for medicine and the individual who suffers the impacts: of the diagnosis, of the manifestation of the clinical symptoms/ hospital admission, in the relationship with the family/ hospital and with the perspective of death. The first chapter presents the principles and path of the methodology, composed by Narrative and Disease, the Construction of the Narrative and the Experience in the Field Work. The second, third and fourth chapters are the illness narratives of the AIDS patients. Our results showed that the patients present some times illness as narrative, other times narratives about illness and they make the use of the narrative as way to transform the events and to build a world of illness; for reconstruction of the life history; as means of explaining and understanding the disease; as a strategic instrument and to transform the individual experiences in collective experiences. The narratives revealed: the experience of hospital admission expressed by the patients as a protection from the outer world; the importance attributed to doctors as participants in the treatment; the existence of denominations others than AIDS, like AZT, HIV positive; the diagnosis as a moment of rupture, the impact of death; the importance of sexual intercourse in the transmission of the disease; the idea that the transmission by I'v drugs and contaminated bood is due to "sloppyness"; the configuration of a new body with AIDS.
