The following thesis analyses the variety of masks emulated by the satires credited to Gregorio de Matos e Guerra, through a deeper look within the prerequisites for the existence of the satire since his classical predecessors. We will start with the dramaturgical laughter of Aristophanes, going through the satires of Juvenal and Horace and also of the Aristotelian thought, and finally to the preceptists of 17th Century, this study recalls the rhetorical precepts that have entwined themselves with the imitation art since Antiguity. The objective is to understand the satires, its nuances and intentions, as well as its construction steps and the mechanism of its functioning, to make a more accurate analysis of the satirical works from between 16th and 17th Centuries possible. As soon as the data for a deeper analysis is collected, the following work aims at outlining the similarities that highlight the patterns attributed to the relation between Gregorian Satire and the native-Brazilian Indian element and the Mulato, here studied as rhetorical archetypes, identifying its specific characteristics as rhetorical-poetic ordinations that have become commonplaces in the comical picture of the native-Brazilian Indian and of the Brazilian Mulato. After outlining the possible directions of the present work, we will be able to understand how the 17th Century satire was built and with which texts it s related to. Besides that, we have opened the possibility of comparison between the treatment received by the studied archetypes and many texts from Brazilian Literature, as the importance of those long lost codices might be greater for our cultural tradition than we suspect.
