Vivência e coping de adolescente com doença oncológica fora de possibilidade de cura atual: um estudo à luz de Peplau

Cancer is the name given to a set of more than 100 diseases that presents an uncontrolled growth of cells, which invade tissues and organs. It constitutes a public health problem for both the developed and the developing world. For the year 2016, there were 420,310 cases of cancer expected to occur, excluding non-melanoma skin tumors, of which 12,600 would correspond to pediatric tumors. The object of this study was the perceptions and coping strategies of the adolescent with oncologic disease out of the current possibility of healing in the process of illness, and its objectives were: to understand the perceptions of the adolescent with oncologic disease out of the current possibility of healing related to process of illness; to describe the coping strategies adopted by these adolescents with oncologic disease out of the current possibility of healing in the process of illness and to highlight the nursing actions in the face of the experience and the coping strategies of the adolescent with oncologic disease out of the current possibility of healing, in the light of the Peplau’s Theory. This is an exploratory study with a qualitative approach. The research scenarios were the nursing ward and the pediatric outpatient clinic of a national public reference hospital, which is located in the city of Rio de Janeiro. This study was attended by 09 adolescents aged from 12 to 20 years and with oncologic disease out of the current healing, who were in outpatient follow-up or hospitalized at the time of the interview. Based on Bardin’s Content analysis, we produced six categories: Living the difficult moment of the disease trajectory; Feeling social isolation and life breakdown; Feeling the support of significant people; Seeking comfort in God; Facing the oncologic disease from playful and leisure strategies and Overcoming the difficult phase of the disease. For adolescents, experiencing cancer was a difficult process, since they suddenly encountered a disease that entailed a series of routines of treatment, impositions and restrictions. Faced with illness, they saw their lives stop, because they had to move away from their social groups and routines. In the face of the sudden, painful and stressful changes, they used coping strategies focused on emotion. It is up to nurses to appreciate the care by promoting means with the purpose of fostering the reflection of the subjects involved about what it is possible to do in an attempt to mitigate the suffering experienced, thereby preserving their individuality and allowing practices that may lead to comfort and quality of life.
