Resumo: The motorsport development at the city of Rio de Janeiro (RJ) has as a landmark, in the first half of the 20th century, the realization of the Gávea Circuit and, in the second half, the Speedway construction and the Formula 1 Grand Prix. The Gávea Circuit was the largest national automobile event. The loss of condition of Republic Capital, in 1960, transformed the city of RJ into the State of Guanabara (SG). A complicated political scenario emerged, characterized by the ghost of the merger between the SG and the state of RJ. Fluminense motor racing continued with sparse street racing until 1966, when its racetrack was inaugurated. In the period 1954-1966, Interlagos emerged with the symbiosis between the speedway and the automobile factories that were installed in the state of São Paulo (SP) during the Juscelino Kubistchek government. Between 1967 and 1970, Interlagos closed for reforms and, in those three years, the Rio racetrack was the main track in the country. When Interlagos reopened, it once again attracted attention, driven by, the SP city identity with the auto racing. In the 1970s, Brazil was a red-hot car market, composed of multinationals such as Ford, General Motors, Dodge and Volkswagen. The “economic miracle” was being lived, and the military government advertised itself proudly, taking advantage of sports. An F1 race was starting to become a reality, as there was political interest and, economic and sporting conditions. In 1973, the first F1 Grand Prix officially takes place in Brazil, at Interlagos. Considering the context presented, the objective of this thesis is to understand why F1 rose in RJ, but left the city years later. To this end, the research is divided into two articles: the first with the objective to analyze the process that led F1 to come to Rio between 1978 and 1981, and the second that seeks to understand how these races were perpetuated in Rio, returning to SP in 1990. The methods used in the study were: documentary research and interview. In the documentary research, the media analyzed were from the newspapers; O Globo, Jornal do Brasil and Jornal dos Sports and from Quatro Rodas magazine. The elite interviews were conducted with Celso Itiberê, Lito Cavalcanti and Flávio Gomes. To better understand the data, Pierre Bourdieu's concepts of field and habitus were used as theorical support. It was concluded that political and economic issues that involved the merger of the SG and RJ, through an intervention government, coincide with the period of F1's arrival at the Rio Speedway, pointing out political pretensions to the race in the city, which, in 1989, after a decade of bad organization, almost left the country, which led the Brazilian Automobile Confederation to seek in the city of SP an alternative to promote the event, a fact that points to the idea of distinction linked to F1 and to the influence of the political field as the main mediator of the reasons that made this event change through this cities during the studied period.

Submitted by Cristina CEH/B (cehb@uerj.br) on 2021-09-30T20:39:57Z No. of bitstreams: 1 Tese - Rodrigo Vilela Elias - 2020 - Completa.pdf: 2978049 bytes, checksum: ca94c5408ac2b9fea2fc1e769b4d719e (MD5)Made available in DSpace on 2021-09-30T20:39:57Z (GMT).
