The fact that Portugal, for centuries, did not recognize women and their contribution to the historical construction of their country, does not mean that they did not exist and act in different sectors of society, in distinct ways. The need for registration arises from the realization of erasure that, in general, was operated by a male contingent desiring to preserve the social order, striving for the maintenance of a deeply conservative and anti-feminine mentality of excluding women from areas of production and work, a factor that guaranteed their economic and social subservience to men and the maintenance of the patriarchal structure for centuries. In this sense, the present dissertation undertakes a historical review by questioning Western literary canons, establishing a dialogue between the poetics of Judith Teixeira and Florbela Espanca– important strands of female-authored writing from the early twentieth century in Portugal, while raising feminist and gender-related issues about a secular literary genealogy denied by patriarchy. And that resulted in the silencing and exclusion of women from the History of Portuguese Literature. The objective is that, through the revision of authors who proposed to reflect on 19th-20th century Portugal and the writing of Lusophone female authors from this period, we can elaborate significant contributions regarding the devices of control and annihilation of subjectivity and the freedom of existence of the female body engendered not only, but especially, in the arts. To this end, ten poems by the aforementioned authors have been selected, which highlight the character of revolt, insurrection, and female disobedience, as well as offer a glimpse of the extent of the literary sophistication and aesthetic care of Judith Teixeira and Florbela Espanca, but which, due to the patriarchal system, were only recognized posthumously.
