Formação humana no ciberespaço: os sentidos da presença na educação a distância

This thesis starts off from the reflection on the concept of presence in a kind of education which distinguishes itself by distance, also known as Distance Education and breaks off with the space that separates people who want to have access to formal on-line education, despite of the place where they live or the time scheduled for classes, and attends university in a presential mode. The urgency of a new and singular mode of presence which tends to occur now within the environment called cyberspace should not be discarded as theoretical and/or methodological presupposition. However, discussions about this are very few, besides the fact distance education public policies implemented in Brazil are not concerned with this idea, but with the fulfillment of their practical objective which is reaching whoever is distant (or is not physically present). Thinking of the subject as someone who is present and acts , and reflecting on the conditions which imply in his presence, not only physical since being present is a state, a willingness, a way of being and acting in the world we consider action a concept developed by Hanna Arendt as a necessary condition for presence at distance and, consequently, human formation in the cyberspace. The presence is not, according to Arendt, something static or just a type of behavior but an action, capable of creating and reinventing the new, producing movement and, thus, being a condition for the subject to make presence , that is, there should be what we call presence-action . The thesis addresses empirical conceptions on presence, virtual presence and technological supports which propitiate its emerging; it also deals with the controversial questioning about distance education: to what extent is there interaction or isolation within cyberspace?; presents a brief contextualization of distance education around the world and in Brazil, summing up public policies implemented by distance education; discuss some of several meanings of presence in distance education and the relationship between subject and cyberspace educational environments; and does a critical analysis on when presence would be equivalent to action. The research is anchored on two main concepts: presence and action. Other concepts and definitions used to build up the thought are: distance education, cyberspace, human formation, network, subject and Modernity. Besides Arendt, authors like Pierre Lévy, Manuel Castells, Maria Rita Kehl, Nelson Pretto, among others, provide theoretical references to the reflections and arguments developed in this work.
