MYSTIC AND LANDLESS IDENTITY: AN ANALYSIS OF MULTIMODAL CRITICAL DISCOURSE ON THE MOVEMENT OF RURAL WORKERS WITHOUT EARTH

This article investigated the constitution of the Landless identity in one of the mystics performed by the Landless Workers Movement (MST) - the mystics can be characterized as a kind of theatrical ritual that the Landless perform daily in the their encampments and settlements in order to strengthen the struggle for land and social transformation in Brazil. Specifically, I analyzed the mystical violence in the field - conducted in a Training Course at the National School Florestan Fernandes (ENFF) - trying to understand how the linguistic-discursive elements are related to the semiotic components in the identity construction of the MST Landless. For that, I used a Speech-Based Discourse Analysis approach, Fairclough (trad, 2001, 2003), Chouliaraki & Fairclough (1999), Magellan (2004, 2005) combined with the proposed Visual Design Grammar developed by Kress and van Leeuwen (1996). I realized that the multimodal discourse of the MST mystique is composed of discursive elements (lexical choices of the Landless) and imaginary (multimodal texts) that interrelate dialectically in an internalization / articulation relation in the social practice of mysticism, and that through this same discourse the said social movement builds a style of being Landless in a relationship conflicting with the hegemonic identity of the Landless people inculcated in the majority of Brazilians through the media that stand against agrarian reform in Brazil.
