VOWEL EXEMPLARS BY ENGLISH AS A FOREIGN LANGUAGE TEACHERS IN RIO GRANDE DO NORTE

Resumo: This study has as its main objective to compare acoustically Brazilian Portuguese (BP) and English as a Foreign Language (EFL) front vowels by teachers of English in western Rio Grande do Norte, a Brazilian state. BP [i, e, É›] and EFL [i, ɪ, É›, æ] vowels have been analysed. The study begins by presenting a literature overview section involving Portuguese-English interphonology. Methodology procedures involved data reanalysis of a previous study (BARBOZA, 2008), whose data collection involved production of tonic front vowels between stop consonants, in two-syllable words with stress in the first syllable in BP words, and one-syllable words in EFL, inserted in carrier-sentences "X. Diga X alto" and "X. say X again". Quantitative acoustic analysis involved data collection of F1, F2 and duration values of aforementioned vowels. Results indicated significant spectral overlap of BP/EFL vowels [i], BP [e] and EFL [ɪ], as well as BP [É›] and EFL [É›, æ]. Significant differences have been noticed involving BP and EFL vowels as regards duration as well.

O estudo tem por objetivo comparar acusticamente as vogais anteriores do Português Brasileiro (PB) com as vogais correlatas do Inglês Lí­ngua Estrangeira (ILE) produzidas por professores de Inglês no oeste do Rio Grande do Norte. Analisamos as vogais [i, e, É›] do PB e [i, ɪ, É›, æ] do ILE. No referencial teórico, apresentamos uma revisão da literatura envolvendo a pesquisa acústica da interfonologia português-inglês. Procedimentos metodológicos envolveram a reanálise de dados coletados no estudo de Barboza (2008), cuja metodologia envolveu a produção de vogais anteriores tônicas, entre consoantes plosivas, em palavras dissí­labas com acento na primeira sí­laba no PB, e palavras monossí­labas no Inglês, inseridas nas frases-veí­culos "X. Diga X alto" e "X. Say X again". A análise dos sons vocálicos obtidos através dos experimentos acima caracterizouse pela obtenção dos valores de F1, F2 e da duração das vogais supracitadas.
