Northeast Brazil: a glance at the semiarid region and the drought experience

Resumo: The Brazilian regions"™ classification is considered to be based to consider aspects such as their history, geo-environmental conditions and cultural particularities. The present study aims to demonstrate that not only climatic factors are responsible for the delay in the development of the Northeastern semi-arid, but a whole set of cultural factors that are linked to the history, society and economy of this territory. To achieve this, we use a bibliographic approach in order to deepening the actions knowledge and interpretation of the various subjects that contribute to delineate the Brazilian Northeast"™s space and the Northeastern semi-arid, as well as their occupation, permanence and coexistence. Thus, it approached here a critical view of the reality of the Northeastern semiarid, where we dialogue with drought and its relationship with social issues, especially in view of the historical context of the region, where we can highlight that the management of environmental conditions is the main actor of the reality that lives in the northeast of Brazil in the current days.

Por eso, utilizamos un enfoque bibliográfico con el fin de profundizar en el conocimiento e interpretación de las acciones de los diversos sujetos que contribuyen para el diseño del espacio en el Nordeste brasileño y el semiárido nordestino, así­ como su ocupación, permanencia y convivencia. Así­, aquí­ se aborda una visión crí­tica de la realidad del semiárido nordestino, donde dialogamos con la sequí­a y su relación con la problemática social, especialmente en vista del contexto histórico de la región, donde podemos destacar que la gestión de las condiciones ambientales es el principal actor de la realidad que se vive hoy en el Nordeste de Brasil. A classificação das regiões brasileiras se dá de forma a considerar aspectos tais como sua história, condições geoambientais e particularidades culturais. O presente estudo tem, por objetivo, demonstrar que não apenas fatores climáticos são responsáveis pelo atraso no desenvolvimento do semiárido nordestino, mas todo um conjunto de fatores culturais que estão atrelados à história, à sociedade e à economia deste território. Utilizamos, para tal, uma abordagem bibliográfica com vistas a aprofundar o conhecimento e a interpretação das ações dos diversos sujeitos que contribuem para o delinear do espaço do Nordeste brasileiro e do semiárido nordestino, bem como sua ocupação, permanência e convivência.
