Resumo: The idea of a default grammar in early stages of language acquisition has been put forward by several linguists. Hyams (1983) was one of the first who observed that children shows up first a null subject parameter, changing it later for the non-drop pattern, in the case of the English language acquisition. The main objective of the present study, based on the data examined, is to spread the news about the existence of a parameter in a default status for negation in Brazilian Portuguese.KEYWORD: Generative theory.
