Connectivity in adversative sentences in Spanish and Portuguese in negative contexts of refutation and restriction

Considering the current Spanish and Portuguese languages, we have analyzed the constructions with adversative dynamics and with a denial in the first element, from a discursive, non-logicist perspective, focused on the construction of the discourse objects. Our main objective is to examine the dynamics of specific connectors and of the absence of a connector. Based on a series of searches in reference corpora in both languages, we have found again, for Spanish, the many times discussed the difference between the “pero” and “sino” connectors, but some other forms also appeared in the search. For Portuguese, we have questioned, beyond the “mas” dynamics, some units like “mas sim” and “e sim”, an expression which has shown particularly revealing results. We have formulated some conclusions about the distribution of these connectivity forms, including the absence of connectors, in each language, in relation to refutative or restrictive values.
