Tradition and transgression in Abril Despedaçado

This work sought to bring reflections on how different ways of conceiving the world and social relations determined the trajectory of the Breves family, in the film Abril Despedaçado (2002). The narrative revolves around two rival families who are based on the motto “an eye for an eye, a tooth for a tooth”. To do so, we analyzed five fragments of argumentative dialogues that pointed to divergent perspectives and their relationship with values, vices and virtues, based on Aristotle and Perelman and Olbrechts-Tyteca, among others, such as Assis (2006) and Ferreira (2010). The analyzes pointed out that the escape from revenge, far from demonstrating a lack of courage, became virtue, the middle ground, the mean, freedom, happiness. It can be said, then, that the resignification of justice and honor was due to the operation against blindness that curtailed the cyclical environment in which the Breves family was inserted.
