This work aims to study the designations of disability in Brazil in the19th century, according to the perspective of the Bakhtin Circle, regarding the establishment of Special Education in Brazil. It is intended to emphasize the importance of understanding the discursive construction as a determinant in the manifestations and participation of these people in society and the sociocultural representations of intellectual disability in the language. This investigation also proposes a discussion of the notion of dialogism which leads to the discussion of alterity and the construction of identity. The purpose is to highlight the understanding of the institution, legalization, use and re-signification of words as a discursive place of importance for symbolic struggles, valuing the understanding of designations, taken as statements, as a tool for the construction of equality of rights to minority groups and a determining factor in the construction of a world actually occupied with equity issues.
