The designations of individuals with intellectual disability in Brazil since mid nineteenth century: a bakhtinian perspective

Resumo: This work aims to study the designations of disability in Brazil in the19th century, according to the perspective of the Bakhtin Circle, regarding the establishment of Special Education in Brazil. It is intended to emphasize the importance of understanding the discursive construction as a determinant in the manifestations and participation of these people in society and the sociocultural representations of intellectual disability in the language. This investigation also proposes a discussion of the notion of dialogism which leads to the discussion of alterity and the construction of identity. The purpose is to highlight the understanding of the institution, legalization, use and re-signification of words as a discursive place of importance for symbolic struggles, valuing the understanding of designations, taken as statements, as a tool for the construction of equality of rights to minority groups and a determining factor in the construction of a world actually occupied with equity issues.

É marcado inicialmente por um histórico da Educação Especial brasileira. Propõe-se um estudo a partir das iniciativas oficiais e privadas desde as últimas décadas do século XIX, com o estudo das denominações voltadas às pessoas com deficiência, com foco em um grupo específico: pessoa com deficiência intelectual. Pretende-se, a partir da perspectiva bakhtiniana, ressaltar a importância da compreensão da construção discursiva como determinante nas manifestações e participação dessas pessoas na sociedade e as representações socioculturais da deficiência intelectual a partir da linguagem. Esta investigação propõe, ainda, discussão da noção de dialogismo que, no caso, leva à discussão de alteridade e construção da identidade, especialmente da pessoa a ser denominada por uma outra.
