Resumo: | Onychomycosis is a disease that affects the nails, caused mainly by dermatophyte fungi – e.g. Trychophyton mentagrophytes and T. rubrum – and that can cause numerous physiological, psychosocial and occupational effects. This condition presents difficulties regarding its diagnosis and treatment, due to the inherent characteristics of the nails, so that those affected, generally need to undergo, for a long period, the use of oral medications, which can bring with them unwanted side effects. In view of these difficulties, the possibility arises of using, as an alternative to the standard systemic treatment, pyroligneous extracts as a topical medication to combat onychomycosis. These products, obtained from pyrolysis bio-oil of different types of biomass, have a proven antimicrobial action against some bacteria and fungi, in addition to being well established in eastern agriculture in several other applications. The present work is set to investigate the action of pyroligneous extracts of palm trees against the main microorganisms that cause onychomycosis, by the Disk Susceptibility and the Broth Dilution tests, following the guidelines of the Clinical & Laboratory Standards Institute (CLSI). Thus, it was possible to obtain qualitative results, by observing the inhibition of microbial growth in Petri dishes, and quantitative results, by obtaining the Minimum Inhibitory Concentration (MIC) of each evaluated extract, proving their antimicrobial action. The composition of each of these extracts was also investigated, searching for correlations between compounds and antifungal potential, according to which it was possible to verify the presence of phenolic groups, organic acids and carbonyls, which are derived from the degradation of lignin and are the main responsible for imparting such antimicrobial activity to the extracts. |
