Resumo: The current work intends to discuss the importance of reading the classics in the educator’s formation. Among the classics, Karl Marx (1818-1883) and Friedrich Engels (1820-1895) are regarded as the creators of the historical-dialectical materialism, which is a new way to comprehend society and consequently education. These authors highlighted the necessity to understand social relationships to discuss education and, to do so, they used a few paramount categories like: totality, historicity and praxis.  Thus the aim of this paper is not to exhaust the proposed theme, but rather, raise and instigate a debate over the subject.

Ellos  demostraron la necesidad de comprensión de las relaciones sociales para discutir la educación y para tal utilizaron algunas categorías fundamentales, tales como: totalidad, historicidad, praxis. Así pues, la pretensión de este trabajo no es agotar la materia, pero proponer y estimular el debate de esta problemática. O presente texto tem como intento discutir a importância da leitura dos clássicos na formação do educador, dentre estes, Karl Marx (1818-1883) e Friedrich Engels (1820-1895), que são considerados os criadores de uma nova forma de compreensão da sociedade e por extensão da educação – o materialismo histórico-dialético. Eles demonstraram a necessidade do entendimento das relações sociais para discussão da educação e para tal, utilizaram algumas categorias fundamentais, como: totalidade, historicidade, práxis. Assim, a pretensão deste trabalho não é esgotar a temática proposta, mas suscitar e fomentar o debate dessa problemática.
