Summary: The methodological issues of the Urban Historical Geography to examine cities in the long duration are discussed in this text. Two concepts are initially proposed: the “thick periods” and the “temporal hiatus”. The literature including different authors from different subjects dealing with the periodization of the cities is evaluated. Finally, a methodological proposal is presented for (1) using the cited periodizations; (2) examining contexts; (3) analysing the agents; and (4) the spatial development of the cities.
