Resumo: This research aims to analyze how geographic elements, in particular cartographic representation, are part of the strategy employed by the Argentine Republic in the dispute over space in the South Atlantic and Antarctica in the period 2000-2020. Firstly, the geographic context of the region is analyzed, considering its characteristics and the interest that countries have in these areas. Secondly, in order to show some of the actions behind Argentina’s claim on that region, the main economic sources of the islands are addressed. Finally, recent official documents – Act 26.651 of 2010 (ARGENTINA) and Mapa de los Espacios Marítimos (2020) – involving the dispute over those areas are analyzed. At the end of the work, it becomes evident how maps are tools of power and how issues related to scale and colors are fundamental to assign political elements to these cartographic documents, making them relevant in the territorial dispute.

Em um primeiro momento, analisa-se o contexto geográfico da região, considerando-se suas características e o interesse que os países têm nestas áreas. Em um segundo momento, para mostrar algumas das ações por trás da reivindicação destes espaços pela Argentina, são citadas as principais fontes econômicas das ilhas. Por fim, analisam-se documentos oficiais recentes – a Lei nº 26.651 de 2010(ARGENTINA) e o Mapa de los Espacios Marítimos (2020) – que envolvem a disputa por essas áreas.
