Innovation and Patents: a case study in a hospital

Resumo: | This article is a case study, with a qualitative approach, which aims to analyze the patents requested and granted to a hospital which is a leading organization in innovation in medical services in Brazil. The best-ranked company in the category of the Valor Inovação Brasil 2020 ranking – Sociedade Beneficente Israelita Brasileira Hospital Albert Einstein – was the selected case. Patent application data between 2016 and 2021were collected with Einstein as assignee in Google Patents and Espacenet databases. Seventeen patent applications were examined: the findings include a higher incidence of open, incremental, process, and product innovations, in invention patents, and without a definitive opinion issued in Brazil. The study is potentially useful for the area of health innovation and the development of a critical look at intellectual property issues and innovative solutions. |

The study is potentially useful for the area of health innovation and the development of a critical look at intellectual property issues and innovative solutions.Este artigo consiste em um estudo de caso, com abordagem qualitativa, que tem como objetivo analisar as patentes solicitadas e concedidas a uma organização líder em inovação em serviços médicos hospitalares no Brasil. O caso a ser estudado foi selecionado considerando a primeira colocação no ranking Prêmio Valor Inovação Brasil 2020, na categoria “serviços médicos”: Sociedade Beneficente Israelita Brasileira Hospital Albert Einstein. Os dados foram coletados a partir da busca por pedidos de patentes, tendo como titular o Einstein, entre os anos de 2016 e 2021, nas bases Google Patents e Espacenet. Foram verificados 17 pedidos de patentes, com maior incidência de inovações abertas, incrementais, de processo e produto, em patentes de invenção, e sem parecer definitivo expedido no Brasil.
