Analysis of the Feasibility of Obtaining a Geographical Indication Record (IG) for Soapstone in the Ouro Preto Region

Resumo: This work investigated the possibility of registering a Geographical Indication (GI) for soapstone in the region of Ouro Preto, in the state of Minas Gerais. A conceptualization of industrial property was made, its influence on the development of the region, which is recognized, and a survey on which laws and bodies are competent to grant a GI. Through studies on the traditionality, quality and typicality of soapstone, data were collected that would reflect the potential of the region to become a GI. With documentary research it was possible to discuss and verify the viability and obstacles for the registration of an indication of origin in the region.

Foi feita uma conceituação da propriedade industrial, sua influência no desenvolvimento da região em que é reconhecida e um levantamento sobre quais leis e órgão são os competentes para outorgar uma IG. Por meio de estudos sobre a tradicionalidade, a qualidade e a tipicidade da pedra-sabão, levantou-se dados que traduzissem as potencialidades da região em se tornar uma IG.
