The aim of this work was to identify legislation and supporting programs of structuring and management of geographical indications (GI) and the role of the multiple actors in the federal, state and municipal scenario regarding the role of the government and private entities in the process of construction of public policies and strategic actions that support the development of GI in Brazil. GI are collective tools of appreciation of products that are linked to specific areas having as an apparatus to its development legislation and government programs. This is a qualitative research, descriptive kind, with data collection and bibliographic and documentary analyses. This work identified the participation of multiple actors, public and private, in the process of acknowledgment of GI as well of the developed actions of the public programs. However, it was observed the need for the participation of the municipal and state government regarding the creation of public policies and programs to support the development of GI in its area.
