Packaging is an important item, used in the food industry, responsible for the presentation and durability of the product. Due to the growth of industries, and the diversity of new food products, packaging innovations are constant. Therefore, this work presents a theoretical basis and a technological prospection related to the types of packaging and related technologies. It was possible to notice the growth in the number of patent families, for countries like China, Japan, the European Patent Organization and the United States. This number indicates the innovative efforts that have been carried out by different countries, attesting to the concern with the conservation and innovation of these products. The importance of innovation is observed to ensure a prominent position in the market to extend its shelf life, in order to enable its distribution, shelf life (storage), consumption and identification in new types of packaging, with biodegradable characteristics, easy recycling, free of toxic components, and that are of low production cost and versatile in their use.
