THE ETHICS OF LABOR IN AGRIBUSINESS EXPANSION: transvaluation, depreciation and disciplining

Resumo: Taking the largest irrigation area in Latin America as an empirical  reference, in this article I deal with thevicissitudes involved in rural work relationships in Brazilian agribusiness. Based on ethnography adressed to temporary migrant workers from several states in Northeast, I seek to analyze the interweaving between a) the transposition of peasant cultural traces to agribusiness, d) the moral expropriation of workers, and c) disciplining mechanisms. Such interlacing puts on the ground(and in mind) a kind of good worker ethics, which is problematized as a construct of a particular society,which makes agribusiness expand with its own contours and procedures, although heterogeneous.

Sur la base d’uneethnographie initialement adressée aux travailleursmigrants temporaires de différents États du Nord-Est, je cherche à analyser l’entrelacement entre latransposition des modes paysans à l’agro-industrie,l’expropriation morale des travailleurs et lesmécanismes de discipline. De tels enchevêtrementsmettent sur le terrain (et à l’esprit) une sorted’éthique du bon travailleur, qui est problématiséecomme une construction d’une société particulière,qui fait croître l’agrobusiness avec ses proprescontours et procédures, bien que hétérogènes.Tomando o maior polo de irrigação da América Latina como referência empírica, neste artigo trato das vicissitudes envolvidas na configuração de relacionamentos em torno do trabalho no âmbito do agronegócio. A partir de etnografia inicialmente endereçada a trabalhadores temporários migrantes de vários estados do Nordeste, busco analisar entrelaçamentos entre a transposição de modos camponeses ao agronegócio, a expropriação moral de trabalhadores e mecanismos de disciplinamento.
