Sexual orientation and sex reassignment surgery: trans women’s experience with passing and maintaining intimate relationships

Resumo: This study problematizes the categories of heterosexual women and non-transmedicalized women, used toselect interviewees for the research ‘Intimate experiences of travestis and transgender women.’ We discuss the notions ofbiological sex, sexual orientation, and gender identity and which assumptions are used to define transgender people’ssexual orientation; as well as the need for sex reassignment surgery to differentiate between travestis and transgenderwomen. Its approach is self-ethnographic, for one of the authors is a heterosexual and non-transmedicalized transsexualwoman (at the time of writing). Passing emerges as a primary reference for maintaining an aesthetic legitimacy oftransition and as a factor that minimizes the violence and transphobia experienced. Finally, we analyze how these elements(sexual orientation, reassignment surgery, and passing) help maintain the intimate relationships these women experience.

Se discute las nociones de sexo biológico, orientación sexual e identidad de género, así como quésupuestos son utilizados para definir la orientación sexual de las personas trans. También se pone en discusión lanecesidad de cirugía de reasignación de sexo para diferenciar a las mujeres transexuales de las mujeres travestis. Lainvestigación utiliza el enfoque autoetnográfico, porque una de las autoras es mujer transexual heterosexual y notransgenitalizada (en el momento de la redacción del artículo). La transitabilidad surge como una referencia principalpara mantener legitimidad estética de la transición y como un factor que minimiza la violencia y la transfobiaexperimentadas. Finalmente, se analiza cómo los elementos –orientación sexual, cirugía de reasignación ytransitabilidad– ayudan a mantener las relaciones afectivo-sexuales que tienen estas mujeres.O artigo problematiza duas categorias – mulheres heterossexuais e mulheres não-transgenitalizadas – utilizadas para selecionar entrevistadas para a pesquisa ‘Vivências afetivo-sexuais de mulheres travestis e transexuais’. Discute-se as noções de sexo biológico, orientação sexual e identidade de gênero e de quais pressupostos  partimos para definir a orientação sexual de pessoas trans. Também se discute a necessidade da cirurgia de redesignação sexual para diferenciar mulheres travestis de mulheres transexuais. A pesquisa inclui uma abordagem abordagem autoetnográfica, em virtude de uma das autoras ser uma mulher transexual heterossexual e não-transgenitalizada (à época da escrita do artigo). A passabilidade surge como referência primordial para a manutenção de uma legitimidade estética da transição e como fator minimizante das violências e transfobia vivenciadas.
