City of Invisible Girls: Gender Cartographies in the free public spaces of Florianópolis

Resumo: Urban leisure and recreational practices in the city are rights that must be considered in public policy for children and adolescents. With the cartographic method, we aimed to characterize the ways in which children use public open spaces in Florianópolis/SC, relating aspects of gender and age. The data were recorded in field diaries composed when the researcher moved around the city. In total, 81 leisure facilities for children were observed in 19 districts of the city, accounting for 210 children and adolescents, 30% of which were female. The invisibility and low presence of girls in these places seem to be marks of gender oppression, which is engendered over the years in female bodies. In conclusion, the intersectionality between gender and age group can influence access to the right to leisure in public spaces, with girls, specially the older children and teens, experiencing more restricted access.

A partir del método cartográfico, el objetivo de este texto es caracterizar cómo los niños utilizan los espacios públicos libres en Florianópolis, en Santa Catarina (Brasil), relacionando aspectos de género y edad. Se recopilaron los datos de diarios de campo elaborados cuando el investigador se desplazaba por la ciudad. En total, se observaron 81 espacios de ocio para niños en 19 distritos de la ciudad, con 210 niños y adolescentes observados, de los cuales el 30% eran de género femenino. La invisibilidad y la baja presencia de las niñas en estos lugares parecen ser una marca de opresión de género, que se engendra a lo largo de los años en los cuerpos femeninos. No total, foram observados 81 equipamentos de lazer para a infância em 19 bairros da cidade, contabilizadas 210 crianças e adolescentes, sendo 30% do gênero feminino. A invisibilidade e baixa presença das meninas nesses locais parecem ser marcas da opressão de gênero, que se engendra, com o passar dos anos, nos corpos femininos.
