Climate change, population growth and per capita income levels drastically affect agriculture, putting global food security at risk. Drought is the climatic change that more affects agriculture, being a type of abiotic stress with an important impact on plant development, survival and reproduction. One of the alternatives for guaranteeing agricultural sustainability would be the plant genetic breeding, through the production of cultivars tolerant to climate change. In this perspective, understanding the phenotypic plasticity of drought tolerant plants is important. The objective of this work was to understand how water stress affects the development, survival and reproduction of the Poaceae S. italica species, which is drought tolerant, over a few generations and in different levels of water availability. This study is at the heart of a broader work, with several approachs, including morphophysiological, biochemical and genetic analyzes, which is analyzing the strategies used to S. italica to respond to water stress. For this, we cultivated two generations of S. italica in a gradient of five levels of water availability, using a growth chamber with controlled conditions of air humidity, luminosity and temperature. The first generation was cultivated from seeds of plants grown up without water restriction and the second from seeds from plants cultivated in moderate water stress. Measurements of vegetative and reproductive yield parameters were carried out, as well as, the soil relative humidity monitoring. The main results of the yield analyzes were: (i) the applied irrigation strategy was efficient for the production of a gradient of phenotypes responsive to water availability, (ii) plants of the most restrictive treatments perish before the reproductive period, and (iii) the intermediate water availability irrigation level generated phenotypes with intermediate phenotypic response. As a conclusion, we show that the adaptation of plants to water stress involves mechanisms that are activated as a function of time duration and intensity of stress, leading to varying levels of morphophysiological response.Costa, Nathalia de SettaCenteno, Danilo da CruzMoraes, Ana Paula deSantos, Tatiane Cristina Nicomedio dos2018info:eu-repo/semantics/publishedVersioninfo:eu-repo/semantics/masterThesisapplication/pdf55 f. : il.http://biblioteca.ufabc.edu.br/index.php?codigo_sophia=111359http://biblioteca.ufabc.edu.br/index.php?codigo_sophia=111359&midiaext=76606http://biblioteca.ufabc.edu.br/index.php?codigo_sophia=111359&midiaext=76605Cover: http://biblioteca.ufabc.edu.br/php/capa.php?obra=111359porreponame:Repositório Institucional da UFABCinstname:Universidade Federal do ABC (UFABC)instacron:UFABCinfo:eu-repo/semantics/openAccess2022-03-25T15:44:24Zoai:BDTD:111359Repositório InstitucionalPUBhttp://www.biblioteca.ufabc.edu.br/oai/oai.phpopendoar:2022-03-25T15:44:24Repositório Institucional da UFABC - Universidade Federal do ABC (UFABC)false |
