The 50+ College Professor: Perceptions about the College Professor Career, Retirement and Aging

Resumo: College Professors over 50 years of age represent about 10% of the total number of professionals hired at Higher Education Institutions in Brazil, according to INEP data (2017). The objective of the research was to analyze the perception of Professors, aged 50 years or older, about their career and the permanence as a Professor at the university after retirement. This is a qualitative study with interviews and content analysis. The results revealed as a positive aspect the autonomy at work and, as a negative aspect, the deficient university management regarding actions aimed at 50+ College Professor. It is hoped that this research will motivate future studies, discussions and the development of policies and strategies considering the work, pre- and post-retirement of 50+ College Professor.

El objetivo de la investigación fue analizar la percepción de los profesores universitarios, con 50 años o más, sobre su carrera y la permanencia como docente en la universidad después de la jubilación. Se trata de un estudio cualitativo con entrevistas y análisis de contenido. Los resultados revelaron como aspecto positivo la autonomía en el trabajo y, como aspecto negativo, la deficiente gestión universitaria en cuanto a las acciones dirigidas al Profesor 50+. Se espera que esta investigación motive futuros estudios, discusiones y el desarrollo de políticas y estrategias considerando el trabajo, pre y post-jubilación del Profesor 50+.Os Professores de Ensino Superior com mais de 50 anos de idade representam cerca de 10% do total de profissionais contratados nas Instituições de Ensino Superior no Brasil, segundo dados do INEP (2017). O objetivo da pesquisa foi analisar a percepção de Professores universitários, com idade igual ou superior a 50 anos, sobre sua carreira e a permanência como docente na universidade após a aposentadoria. Trata-se de um estudo qualitativo com entrevistas e análise de conteúdo. Os resultados revelaram como aspecto positivo a autonomia no trabalho e, como negativo, a gestão universitária deficiente quanto a ações voltadas para o Professor 50+.
