Resumo: This paper aims to highlight the importance of Research and Extension to reach the social function of the Federal Institutes of Education, Science and Technology and its impact on local and regional development in the city of Santa Luzia-MG. To this end, it was decided to follow a descriptive approach, of a qualitative and quantitative character, based mainly on documentary research, with constant support from bibliographic research. The results achieved point out that it is necessary to rethink the Research and Extension actions so that the Federal Institutes’s social function is widely exercised, along with the Teaching activities.

The results achieved point out that it is necessary to rethink the Research and Extension actions so that the Federal Institutes’s social function is widely exercised, along with the Teaching activities.Este artículo tiene como objetivo resaltar la importancia de la Investigación y Extensión para alcanzar la función social de los Institutos Federales de Educación, Ciencia y Tecnología y su impacto en el desarrollo local y regional en la ciudad de Santa Luzia-MG. Con este fin, se decidió seguir un enfoque descriptivo, de carácter cualitativo y cuantitativo, basado principalmente en la investigación documental, con el apoyo constante de la investigación bibliográfica. Los resultados alcanzados señalan que es necesario repensar las acciones de Investigación y Extensión para que la función social de las Institutos Federales se ejerza ampliamente, junto con las actividades de enseñanza.O presente artigo visa evidenciar a importância da Pesquisa e da Extensão para o alcance da função social dos Institutos Federais de Educação, Ciência e Tecnologia (IFs) e o seu impacto no desenvolvimento local e regional da cidade de Santa Luzia-MG. Para tanto, optou-se por seguir uma abordagem descritiva, de caráter quali-quantitativo, tendo como base, sobretudo, a pesquisa documental, com constante apoio da pesquisa bibliográfica.
