“The show must go on”: tracks and mishaps of being a prostitute

Resumo: In its heyday, Guaicurus prostitution zone (Belo Horizonte, MG) was compared to other worldwide “renowned” ones, including the Parisian Moulin Rouge region. However, the women who work there, prostitutes, have always been stigmatized as targets of discrimination and violence. Thus, the purpose of this study was to analyze relations between the sense of work and the identity construction of prostitutes, by making a parallel with the film Moulin Rouge. For that, a qualitative exploratory research was operationalized through interviews based on thematic oral history with 17 prostitutes of that region; its data were submitted to discourse analysis (French approach). The analyses indicated fragile senses and fragmented, multifaceted identities. Daily suffering, silenced own pleasure and immature dreams portray that, whatever the cost, “the show must go on”.

Sin embargo, las mujeres que allí trabajan, las prostitutas, siempre fueran estigmatizadas como objetos de discriminación y violencia. Así, el objetivo de este estudio fue analizar relaciones entre el sentido del trabajo y la construcción de la identidad de prostitutas, haciéndose un paralelo con la película Moulin Rouge. Para ello, una investigación exploratoria cualitativa fue operacionalizada por medio de entrevistas pautadas en historia oral temática con 17 prostitutas de dicha región; sus datos fueron sometidos al análisis del discurso (vertiente francesa). Los análisis indicaron sentidos frágiles e identidades fragmentadas y multifacéticas. Sufrimiento diario, el placer propio silenciado y los sueños inmaduros retratan que, a costa de lo que cueste, “el espectáculo debe continuar”.Em seus tempos áureos, a zona de prostituição da Guaicurus (Belo Horizonte, MG) era comparada com outras  “renomadas” do mundo, dentre as quais a parisiense região Moulin Rouge. No entanto, as mulheres que ali trabalham, as prostitutas, sempre foram estigmatizadas e alvos de discriminação e violência. Assim, o objetivo deste estudo foi analisar relações entre o sentido do trabalho e a construção da identidade de prostitutas, fazendo-se um paralelo com o filme Moulin Rouge. Para tal, uma pesquisa exploratória qualitativa foi operacionalizada por meio de entrevistas pautadas em história oral temática com 17 prostitutas da referida região; seus dados foram submetidos à análise do discurso (vertente francesa). As análises indicaram sentidos frágeis e identidades fragmentadas e multifacetadas.
