Resumo: The objective of this work is to understand the procedural relation between the activities of alliance management, that is, the relational capability, and the performance of the alliance portfolio in the segment of human health laboratories in the Brazilian pharmaceutical industry. We used the strategy of four case studies of contractual strategic alliances in different enterprises through interviews with the managers responsible for the alliances. The interviews were transcript and analyzed by the technique of thematic content analysis with categories defined a priori. It was concluded that the relational capability and the prior experience with alliances reduce transaction costs and may generate an alliance portfolio performance that overwhelms coordination costs.

Se utilizó la estrategia de cuatro estudios de caso de alianzas estratégicas contractuales en diferentes empresas a partir de entrevistas con los gerentes responsables por las alianzas. Las entrevistas fueran transcritas e analizadas por la técnica de análisis de contenido temático categorial con categorías definidas a priori. Se llegó a la conclusión de que la capacidad relacional y la experiencia previa con alianzas reducen los costos de transacción y pueden generar un mayor rendimiento de la cartera de las alianzas que supere los costos de coordinación.O objetivo deste trabalho é compreender a relação processual entre as atividades de gestão de alianças, ou seja, a capacidade relacional, e o desempenho da carteira de alianças no segmento de laboratórios de saúde humana no setor farmacêutico brasileiro. Utilizou-se a estratégia de quatro estudos de caso de alianças estratégicas contratuais em empresas distintas a partir de entrevistas com os gestores responsáveis pelas alianças. As entrevistas foram transcritas e analisadas por meio da técnica de análise de conteúdo temática categorial com categorias definidas a priori.
