Resumo: It is still common, both in scientific productions and in people's imagination, the perspective according to which teachers' suffering and illnesses are the result of these professionals' fragility when faced with the demands of teaching. Considering that it is necessary to overcome this view that, to some extent, expresses the blaming of teachers themselves for the pain that affects them, this article aims to discuss the ethical-political dimension of the suffering of teachers at Higher Education Institutions (HEIs) . Taking as a reference, mainly, the studies by Sawaia (2006, 2014), it is observed that the deepening of neoliberal policies in the field of education produces oppressive mechanisms that generate suffering, fear and humiliation, make teaching subjectivity precarious, leaving these professionals vulnerable to illness processes. Given that these are affects resulting from the implications of neoliberalism in the context of the HEI, the pain that teachers experience in their teaching activity must be characterized as ethical-political suffering. As a contribution, this essay seeks to reinforce the understanding according to which, although felt by the teacher, the suffering resulting from teaching work is a socio-historically situated affect, produced from the relations of domination characteristic of neoliberal rationality, therefore, it does not have its genesis in the subject who suffers.
