Our intention here is to present the problem of the definition of an art object and some of the theories that try to provide an answer, as well as its advantages and disadvantages. We also present the problem of the distinction between art object and craft object, as well as the disadvantages and advantages of possible criteria for this distinction. This discussion is important because it integrates a subarea of philosophy – which is the metaphysics of art – into a fundamental discussion to establish the nature of most objects of aesthetic appreciation (art objects). Although we do not point to a definitive answer to these questions, we show the difficulties of various answers, bringing a negative knowledge (about which theories and arguments do not work) for philosophy.
