Indignation and routinization: on sufferings and strategies to deal with police violence in a pacified favela

Resumo: This text presents a reflection on the strategies of residents of a favela in Rio de Janeiro to deal with police practices of violence and arbitrariness, in a context of "pacification" of the favelas. The implementation of the Unidades de Polícia Pacificadora (UPPs) is important insofar as the UPPs have represented and figured like a shift from the old way of doing of the police, supported in the idea of war, to a new way of doing supported in the notion of peace, at least discursively. From the resident's reports on police violence, I discuss how the indignation towards these practices coexists with certain naturalization, both the permanent exposure to this violence and the strategies to deal with it and protect yourself physically and emotionally.

A implementação das Unidades de Polícia Pacificadora é importante na medida em que elas representaram e figuraram como um deslocamento da antiga forma de ação da polícia calcada na ideia da guerra para uma nova polícia apoiada na noção de paz, ao menos discursivamente.
