The Tents of the Beach and the Leisure “Civilization”: urban space, power and sociability in Praia do Futuro

Resumo: The presence of a large number of beach tents (kinds of pubs, restaurants, show establishment by the sea) in Praia do Futuro is an important aspect in order it can be understood within the contemporary urban dynamics. In recent years some tents expanded and passed through a change that resulted in a modification of the juridical meaning of the word beach (“public goods of people common use”) anointed in the specific Brazilian laws. In contrast to the outsiders of “old beach”, this redefinition is achieved more intensely by the owners of the tents-complexes established in the Association of Businessmen of Praia do Futuro (AEPF). The tents-complexes differ from the craft-tents concerning to architecture and regarding to stylish esthetic features, aspects that are well valued currently by the city marketing.

Nos últimos anos, algumas barracas cresceram e passaram por uma diferenciação que tem resultado na modificação do sentido jurídico de praia (“bem público de uso comum do povo”) consagrado em leis brasileiras específicas. Em contraposição aos barraqueiros outsiders da “praia velha”, essa redefinição é realizada mais intensamente por parte das barracas-complexo de propriedade dos empresários estabelecidas na Associação dos Empresários da Praia do Futuro (AEPF).
