The monograph presented studies the tourism, especially in northeastern Brazil and in the city of Fortaleza, as an economic activity of not only financial but also social and cultural consequences. As being a sector in full development, it was necessary to be studied by an objective and scientific perspective. The methodology used for the development of this research was consulted literature references and, especially, the analysis of data collected from charts and tables of expository compared information. Initially, are examined the different conceptions about what would be the tourism, as human activity and as part of the economy. So, after a more general study on tourism itself, is made an investigation of how that activity works in northeastern Brazil and in the city of Fortaleza as a touristic pole, with numerous natural and cultural assets that make tourism one venture with excellent prospects, with the Ceará in the ranking of national tourist movement between the four main tourist centers of the country.
