Resumo: The present work aims at elucidating the strategies developed by early Ceará’s architecture to soften harsh weather conditions, as well as the material means used for this purpose. We sought to describe and evaluate this heritage in terms of its relation with weather conditions with focus on the historical site of Icó, which consists mainly of XVIII century buildings dating from the period of effective State territory occupation, with the creation of the first villages. Other constructions built in the XIX and XX centuries were also considered, provided they kept architectonic and building features typical of the XVIII century. In this way, we tried to understand how Lusitanian architectonic and urban models adapted to the regional climate and how local materials and techniques were used.

Procurou-se conhecer, descrever e avaliar esse acervo em termos de sua relação com o clima, com foco no sítio histórico de Icó, conformado em sua maioria por edificações do século XVIII, período que demarca o início do processo de efetiva ocupação do território do Estado com a criação das primeiras vilas, bem como por alguns outros imóveis construídos nos séculos XIX e XX, sendo utilizados como referencial apenas aqueles que mantiveram características arquitetônicas e construtivas próprias do setecentos. Tratou-se, assim, de entender como os modelos arquitetônicos e urbanísticos lusitanos adequaram-se ao clima da região e, nesse sentido, de que forma os materiais e técnicas locais foram empregados. Além da consulta bibliográfica, o trabalho foi realizado a partir da leitura e análise de documentos tais como os termos de assentamento de vilas; o relato de viajantes, em especial o relatório da Comissão Científica de Exploração, presidida pelo botânico Freire Alemão em 1858; as anotações e pesquisas relativas ao tema, elaboradas por estudiosos locais; e a documentação relativa ao tombamento federal do sítio histórico cearense, para que fossem reunidas informações, posteriormente sistematizadas e logicamente encadeadas, que viessem a auxiliar na compreensão do problema.
