Resumo: This article examines the changes in the economic strategies and politics of European and US trade-unions during the 1980s and 1990s. During these two decades, trade-unions in Great Britain, Itaiy, France, Germanyand USA showed a notable decrease in the density of syndicate action when compared with the decades of 1960 and 1970. There was a growing fragmentation at the organized syndicate's base, a collective system of work that gradually decentralized and became more flexible, resulting in a more pragmatic approach to work relations. The study finally compares the trade-unionization crisis in the aforementioned countries and that in Brazil.

No decorrer dessas duas décadas, as instituições sindicais - na Grã-Bretanha, Itália, França, Alemanha e EUA - apresentaram um notável decréscimo na densidade sindical comparativamente aos anos 1960 e 1970; uma crescente fragmentação em sua organização sindical de base; um sistema de negociação coletiva do trabalho progressivamente descentralizado e flexível; e procedimentos cada vez mais pragmáticos no quadro das relações de trabalho.
