The advances and retrocessions in chronological order of narrated episodes in Viva o povo brasileiro makes possible to conclude that subjective time prevails over objective one in the book. This article intends to associate, particularly, the memory’s structure – in which past, present and future are mixed in a dinamic way - with the novel, denominating it as a fictious collective biography. Valorizing the subjectivity of each point of view, this ‘biography’ enphasizes the diference between concreete fact and his narration (historic or fictitious) and allows us to atribute to its characters the role of ‘fictitious authors’. Between them, Patrício Macário is especially identified with João Ubaldo, and assumes vital importance to the metaficion developed. He is the last guardian of the object that keeps people’s memory and projects his identity – attribution taken also by Viva o povo brasileiro and by literature in general.
