Resumo: The use of suitable substrates is one of the factors that most affect the production of quality seedlings. In this sense, the present work had as objective to evaluate the development of seedlings of papaya, 'Sunrise Solo', propagated with the use of different substrates from residues. The experiment was carried out in a greenhouse belonging to the Department of Plant Science, Federal University of Ceará. The experimental design was the completely randomized (DIC), with eight treatments, four replicates and ten experimental units, totaling 320 seedlings. Planting was carried out in 50 cell polystyrene trays, filled with eight different substrates: S1 - commercial (Fertile Peat); S2 - green coconut shell fiber + manure + gypsum (3: 1); S3 - bagana + manure + gypsum (3: 1); S4 - sludge + manure + gypsum (3: 1); S5 - commercial (90%) + coconut biochar green (10%); S6 - green coconut shell fiber (90%) + coconut biochar green (10%); S7 - bagana (90%) + coconut biochar green (10%); S8 - sludge (90%) + coconut biochar green (10%). The following biometric data were collected: leaf number, plant height, stem diameter, root system length, leaf area and total dry mass. An assessment was also made for gas exchange. The addition of coconut fiber coal to the substrates promoted the best results for the papaya seedlings, especially the sewage sludge + coal, which had superior performance in all variables. The commercial peat substrate proved to be inefficient for promoting the growth of papaya seedlings.
