Resumo: Brazilian prison system has many problems which produce human rights violations. Inside prisons, there are certain groups which are even more vulnerable, such as transgender internals. The Unidade Prisional Irmã Imelda Lima Pontes attends a part of these incarcerated transexual women, and it has a different approach in dealing with some issues, just as recognizing gender identity and human rights. Using qualitative based methodology, with bibliographic, legislative and field research, this work aims to analyse this project. Although there were advances concerning the respect of gender diversity, these positive changes do not reflect the majority of the State’s prisons.The remaining problems must be answered with public policies that do not strengthen punitive systems, which are known for historic oppression against LGBT people.

Há nele, contudo, grupos ainda mais vulneráveis, como as internas transexuais. A Unidade Prisional Irmã Imelda Lima Pontes atende, hoje, uma parte dessas mulheres, e apresenta uma proposta diferenciada acerca de algumas questões, como o reconhecimento à identidade de gênero e aos direitos humanos. Objetiva o trabalho, mediante pesquisa qualitativa bibliográfica, legislativa e de campo, analisar esse projeto. Constataram-se avanços no respeito à diversidade de gênero, que não refletem, contudo, a realidade do sistema carcerário cearense.
