The first part of this article will discuss the existence of definitions for the terms public sworn translation and certified translation, considering not only the appearance of these terms in specific books on translation and/or interpreting issues (cf. CAMPBELL 1984; AUBERT 1998), but also Brazilian professional and legal matters deriving from the work of sworn translators and legal interpreters (STIs), such as law texts, norms, dispositions etc. The second part of this paper will present some historical aspects related to the evolution of sworn translation and legal interpretation in Brazil and also in South America, whereby a special attention will be paid to the development of legal instruments that have been guiding the function of STIs in Brazil. The third part will provide a critical analysis of three Public Examination Announcements related to the accreditation of new STIs through the Commercial Registry Offices in the states of Ceará/JUCEC, Rio de Janeiro/JUCERJA, and Minas Gerais/JUCEMG; this analysis will be guided by the peculiarities of the pioneer legal documents on public sworn translation in Brazil, as well as by the importance of those that are currently in force. In the fourth part of this paper, final considerations shall be presented about a special issue: the relations between existing legal instruments in the field of public sworn translation and legal interpreting and the practical application of these instruments, especially focusing on the role of the Commercial Registry Offices and their influence on the officially accredited STIs.
