Resumo: | Introduction: Hypopharyngeal cancer has one of the worst prognosis of head and neck tumors. Despite advances in Oncology, disease-free survival is still low. Objective: To determine the clinical and epidemiological profiles of patients with squamous cell carcinoma of the hypopharynx, and to evaluate survival rate. Method: A retrospective study was realized by analyzing the charts of patients with the disease attended at an oncology center from 2006 to 2013. Data were analyzed by exploratory descriptive statistics. Survival was described by the Kaplan-Meier method. Results: There was a predominance of men (86.4%), mean age of 57.5 years, pardos (52.6%), farmers (38.1%), smokers (93.7%) and no history of Cancer in the family (62.5%). The most frequent initial complaint was odynophagia (45.5%). In the majority of cases, the tumor was found in the pyriform recess (50.0%), at advanced stage (95.2%), and was predominantly treated with radiotherapy associated with chemotherapy (59.1%). The mean survival of the patients was 204.5 days, while the mortality rate was 72.7%. Conclusion: The observed pattern is similar to that found in other studies. The high rates of advanced stage patients and mortality indicate a late diagnosis, which reflects the need for preventive actions. |
