Resumo: The paper proposes an investigation about the production processes of culture, memory, forgetfulness and archival footage in the movie Peões (2004), directed by Eduardo Coutinho. This paper’s objective is to discuss the constitution of the collective memory in the documentary through individual memories triggered by archival footage, in order to observe how they contribute to the narrative’s development within a political collective experience. To do so, we discuss the relationship between memory and archive in the communicational processes of culture together with strategies of recalling, resistance, forgetfulness and testimony that are present in Peões. In this theoretical path, we count on the thoughts about the concept of history by Walter Benjamin and the notion of communicational processes, decoding and common memory of the Semiotic Theory of Culture by Iúri Lotman.

O objetivo deste trabalho é discorrer sobre a constituição da memória coletiva no documentário por meio de lembranças individuais desencadeadas pelas imagens de arquivo, a fim de observar como contribuem para a construção narrativa da experiência política coletiva. Para isso, discutimos sobre a relação entre memória e arquivo nos processos comunicacionais de cultura junto a estratégias de rememoração, resistência, esquecimento e testemunho presentes em Peões.
