The object of this work is to access the interest and the literaty performance of children who took part in a special project elaborated by professionals of the Rachel de Queiroz library for infant literature, in the Social Services of Ceará in Fortaleza. The study interviewed 16 children as well as their parents and teachers. Phenomenology was used as the theoretic reference, and an effort was made to get snswers, not only from the children, but also their parents and teachers to questions regarding interest and performance in literature. Heidegger and Gadamer were the references for understanding the relationship between reader, author and text. The altitude of the reader in relation to the text influences the development of pleasure in reading, this being a process which begins in infancy and very often is lifelong. The concept of understanding developed of by Gadamer served as a reference for us to proceed with the empiric assessment. The results showed that some variables interfered with the development of pleasure and performance of the children examined in relation to the act of reading.
