Indústria da moda: uma necessidade da aplicação dos objetivos de desenvolvimento sustentável

Fashion is everywhere, especially the clothes we wear. They are an individual possession, which keep us warm, protect us, and express our individuality. The fashion industry is a growing market, conquering consumers around the world. However, this expansion causes social and environmental damage. Thinking about the future of future generations, the Sustainable Development Goals were created, with targets to be met by the year 2030. This research aims to express the need for the application of SDG 5, 8, 12, 13, 14 and 15 in the fashion industry, through the social and environmental impacts caused by the fashion industry, and examples of actions already taken that seek sustainable development in the area. For this, a bibliographic and documental research was carried out, of articles, books, publications from public and private institutions, journalistic articles, and sector researches, between the years 2006 and 2021. The results showed that the social and environmental impacts during the processes of manufacturing and use of garments are complex. The damages range from labor analogous to slavery, emission of pollutant gases, contamination of water, soil, living beings, deforestation, to the exploitation of wild animals, with the dyeing and wearing stages being the most harmful. To minimize the impacts, some companies and brands opt for the reuse of water during the processes, use of organic cotton, polyester made with recycled PET, production of clothing lines with less greenhouse gas emissions, among others. With this, it was possible to expose the reasons why the SDGs are necessary within the fashion industry
